Did you know that everyone is connected to everyone else through six people? American scientists gave a number of people from the U.S. West Coast the assignment to find a man in New York City they only knew the name of. The clue was that they had to find him through their circle of friends using word of mouth. Turns out that one of their friends had a friend who had a friend that had a friend who had a friend that had a friend who knew that guy in New York. All of the tested persons needed six connections to achieve their goal – getting a hold of that New Yorker.
So is this another proof of the importance of social networks, like for instance MySpace.com, to corporate communication? If a company wanted to gain wide popularity and they had a great message, would they only have to go through six enthusiastic people in order to get their message through?
