Distrust fuels piracy

A lot of people do it and don’t even feel bad about it: illegally downloading music from the internet.
A consumer trust study proves what everybody already knew about music industry.
Variety has a report on a recent Edelman study that reveals the motivations why young music listeners prefer to download film and music illegally.

According to the Edelman survey more than a quarter of 18- to 34-year-olds in the UK and France stated a lack of trust to the entertainment industry as the main reason why they do it.

Gail Becker, Edelman’s global head of digital entertainment division commented on the survey:

It’s bad news for the entertainment companies in that consumers are saying they’re used to getting what they want, when they want, without paying for it on the Internet.People are asking if I am going to pay for my entertainment, what value are you going to give us?“

While technology companies rated highest in Edelman’s report on levels of consumer trust among opinion elites, defined as educated, affluent and media informed, in France and the U.K., media and entertainment companies ranked behind only insurance companies in terms of the public’s distrust. That distrust helps fuel piracy, argues the report.

But there is also good news for the sector which gives hope for the future. „People trust the companies to make entertainment content widely and legally avaible online“, stated Becker. Now all the entertainment companies need to articulate they’re providing value for money.

AND to convince the consumers that content can’t be free of charge…
